Taking Things Off the Table

One of the most common things we hear during strategic planning is: “We don’t want to just wallpaper new strategy over the old.” Organizations know the real challenge isn’t adding new priorities. It’s deciding what no longer belongs.

In a sector built on commitment and service, letting go is hard. Every program matters. Every initiative serves a need. But continuing to add more to already stretched teams is not sustainable. We can no longer rely on workforce heroism to carry the load.

Our research points to a different path forward.

  • Use your mission as a filter. A mission statement shouldn’t justify everything. Instead, it should help clarify what matters most right now and what doesn’t.
  • Create space to stop doing things. Sustainable organizations regularly ask what can be paused, sunsetted, or handed off. Not because the work lacks value, but because something else has become more important.
  • Narrow your focus to increase your impact. Focus is not a limitation; it’s a strategy. The organizations creating the greatest impact are often the ones with the discipline to concentrate their resources where they matter most.
  • Build the ability to reprioritize. Lean decision-making, rapid learning, and operational agility help organizations adapt without constantly overloading their people.

Resilience is not about protecting every initiative. It’s about staying deeply connected to your mission while having the courage to make difficult tradeoffs.
