As the future of social impact work grows more uncertain, clarifying our thinking has never been more crucial. This means challenging our assumptions and reframing our approach when necessary.
Here are five essential mindset shifts to guide us forward:
1. Let Go of “More”
The pursuit of more—more money, more people, more time—often consumes us. We mistakenly treat it as a strategy, rather than recognizing it as an outcome of achieving our goals. This focus on scarcity blinds us to the resources we already have. Instead, let’s pause, take stock of our strengths, and focus on leveraging what’s within our reach right now.
2. Reflect on Progress and Learning
To move beyond the chase for “more,” we must reflect on what’s working. Start with the past 90 days: What progress have we made? What have we learned that strengthens us? By grounding our next steps in our strengths and assets, we build momentum that’s rooted in what we’ve already achieved.
3. Position First, Then Strategize
Uncertainty is inevitable, but good positioning can help us navigate it effectively. Positioning means focusing on our strengths and keeping them relevant. This might involve deepening key relationships, articulating what makes our work indispensable, or building and maintaining financial resilience. When we prioritize positioning, we create a foundation that allows us to adapt to change with confidence.
4. Focus on “What” and “Why” Before “How”
As social impact professionals, we’re wired to jump into action, often starting with “how.” But this can lead to wasted energy if we haven’t first clarified our purpose. Effective strategy begins with understanding the challenge (what) and the reason for action (why). Only then can we determine the best way to proceed.
5. Sustainability Is Built on Relationships
Social impact is powered by relationships: how we engage with our communities, collaborate with partners, and support our teams. Relationships are the foundation of trust, creativity, and enduring connection. Without them, we lose the ability to work together effectively and stay aligned with our mission. We must prioritize our relationships to remain vital.
By adopting these shifts, we can navigate uncertainty with resilience, focus on what truly matters, and build a stronger foundation for social impact. The stakes are too high to settle for anything less.
